It was here, high up on Wartburg Castle above the picturesque old town, that Martin Luther first translated the New Testament into German. But that’s not all! Because the city’s most famous son is none other than musical genius Johann Sebastian Bach. So Eisenach is a popular destination for history buffs and music fans alike. Discover Eisenach The classic tourist attractions in Eisenach include Wartburg Castle, the Luther House, the Bach House and the Narrow House with a width of 2.05 m and a floor area of just 20 m². Or stroll beneath Wartburg Castle through Germany’s largest ensemble of Gründerzeit villas. Hiking between legends and fairy tales The patron saint of Eisenach is St. George the Dragonslayer – so it is not surprising that Eisenach is home not only to a St. George’s Church but also to a Dragon Gorge that is shrouded in myth. This impressive and mystical gorge is just 68 centimetres wide at its narrowest point. The rock formations in the Elves Grotto in the Thuringian Forest are also straight out of a fairy tale landscape. If you still want more, you can go for a hike along the five long-distance trails that pass through Eisenach, such as the famous Rennsteig. Reward yourself on the way back with a visit to the scenic restaurant Phantasie. A treat to eat Enjoy coffee and cake in one of the many cafés in town. Often located in impressive townhouses, the cakes taste especially good. Be sure to try the delicious cheesecake at Café Brühein, or enjoy a snack at the Zucker & Zimt Café-Restaurant, with delicious ice cream in summer and tasty chocolates in winter. If you prefer more hearty fare, don’t miss the original Thuringian dumplings or bratwurst. More to discover Discover Eisenach with Heiko Kleff, the Tour Guide with the Red Shoes. You’ll find him walking around town as Martin Luther, Henry the Monk or Santa Claus, always wearing his trademark red shoes. Or take a little trip to Hörselmühle Schönau with café and bakery, where you can buy real handmade bread baked according to the old tradition. In the evening, be sure to stop by Jazzclub Eisenach, the oldest jazz club in eastern Germany. Shopping with a clear conscience You’ll find lots of beautiful and colourful handmade things in the shop of Treff3 in Schmelzer Straße. Here you are guaranteed to come across a creative handmade gift to take back home. Or how about upcycling – you can buy vintage and industrial design at Vintage Werft Eisenach. For delicate, cheerful craftsmanship in gold, check out Goldschmiede Elisabeth von Thüringen. Be sure to take a look at the handcrafted jewellery. Or visit the Gerold Jakob leather goods shop in Querstraße for a nice selection of handbags, leather belts and purses. GETTING THERE BY AIR Erfurt-Weimar Airport is about 60 km away.
